Current Work

I often use the beauty and simplicity of familiar, functional objects and their power as metaphors.

In addition to my individual body of work, I am currently doing a collaboration with Pulitzer Prize winning, two term U.S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser. Mr. Kooser and I will be exhibiting collaborative works in St. Louis, August 2019. Scroll down and view the category "Poems at an Exhibition".

In 2018 my wife and I were awarded an Artist-In-Residence grant through the National Parks. This work "The Land, Culture and Sustenance" was done in the Petrified Forest Park and surrounding Painted Desert. View in the video category below.

On the Process

My work is created using computer graphics software and archival printing technology. I use 3D imaging software to create photo-realistic renderings – duplicating the physics of light with computer calculations. It basically does what a camera does but by using numerical values instead of light. It’s done without having any tangible, physical subject. As you can imagine, this offers an ever-daunting set of possibilities.

After I create my computer models, I set up a virtual scene; I “position” the lights and render high-resolution images, some of which take up to a week to calculate.

I print my digital images on canvas, archival paper or aluminum sheets.

About

Bio

I started my career with a traditional fine arts background. As an assistant professor at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, I taught painting and drawing at the graduate level and exhibited professionally. It was at the National Center For Supercomputing Applications U. of IL. I became interested in very early experiments in digital imagery.

In 1987, I left the academic world to develop a career as a creative agent using my interest in computer graphics, working for clients all over the world. This included launching products for Intel, packaging for Lotus software (then the second largest software company in the world) and  new product development for Anheuser-Busch, Cargill and Ralston Foods.

Now I’m an owner & partner at MindActive, St. Louis.  My focus is on digital media, directed to online training, web marketing and mobile communication tools.

Over the last 25 years much has evolved in graphic technology but my passion for fine art remains. The current work is an intersection between computer visualization, science and my love for the physical aspects of painting and drawing.
